The Client’s
Challenge - To launch HR Business Partnering
This Financial Services Company wanted a smooth transition to
a new HR Partnering model in ambitious timescales. They needed
to be clear about the roles and ensure the right people were
selected.
develop uk’s Approach
develop uk helped the client define the different roles and
create a selection process to support their timescales. A
pragmatic solution was designed to minimise disruption and
ensure the benchmark for staff in the new structure was
achieved. Clarity on the roles and requirements was backed
up by a support process for HR staff to prepare their
applications and assess their own suitability, cross referenced
with management feedback.
Outcomes
Our work resulted in a blueprint for Business Partnering and
transformation, with clearly defined roles for individuals.
Our approach, which used a degree of self-selection, resulted
in the organisation successfully retaining those most capable
and best suited to the new positions.
The transformation to Business Partnering was achieved
effectively, efficiently and on time, with clearly defined and
planned development for those within the new roles. |

Masterclass
The Client’s
Challenge - To engage and develop the HR Community
A government department wanted to engage
HR in
Partnering and bring the benefits to life.
develop uk’s Approach develop
uk provided real insight into what effective Business Partners
can do in an organisation.
We ran a series of Business Partnering Masterclasses for up
to 80 people at a time, exploring the meaning of true
Business Partnering and demonstrating tools that HR staff can
use with their clients. We brought Business Partnering to life
by bringing in Business Partners from other companies.
Outcomes The
tools introduced at the Masterclasses are now available
to attendees on their Intranet, and we received great
feedback from the Masterclasses.… ‘I learned more
about
Business Partnering and what it means in the last half an hour
than I have in the last 2 years!’ |

Academy
The Client’s
Challenge - To develop a leading edge HR Partnering Academy
The client, a FTSE 100 multinational decided
to set up an HR Business Partnering Academy so they could provide
meaningful and stretching development solutions for their HR
people. develop uk’s
Approach develop uk created
a bespoke 360º tool to assess skills and
competencies of the HR workforce worldwide. The questions were
developed by facilitated sessions with HR Partners across the
world, resulting in an online tool that supported strategic
and personal development programmes by providing high quality,
challenging and incisive reports. Outcomes
Participants are very clear which strengths
they can use to
deliver competitive advantage and the key development areas
they need to address.
The client uses group and regional trends to instigate further
Academy interventions and the 360º tool is now a core thread
running through the Partnering Academy. |

A Partnering
Journey
The Client's
Challenge Over the last year,
Friends Provident's HR Function has moved towards a Partnering
model by creating dedicated Consultancy Teams, Specialist Areas
and a Central Administration Function. In May 2005, following
a restructure, a new HR Senior Management team was set up with
Mary McCrea as Head of HR.
The new HR leadership team wanted to clarify the vision for
HR, engage the team, identify possible improvements and build
on positive achievements. There was a clear desire to ‘raise
the bar’ and deliver a more focused HR, to provide real
business value. This was to be underpinned by a greater sense
of teamwork and community within HR and a shared agenda.
develop uk's Approach
‘I chose develop uk
as they understood our business and culture.
They had exactly the right knowledge, experience and skills
that we needed, as well as a proven track record in HR Business
Partnering’
Mary McCrea, Head of HR,
Friends Provident.
develop uk’s approach
was to:
- work collaboratively with the HR Senior Management Team
- support the development of the HR Vision and principles
for the team
- share experiences of Partnering and lessons learned from
other organisations – what works, what doesn’t
and what this means for Friends Provident
- agree an approach for engaging and involving the whole
HR team in the Partnering journey
- examine the challenges and needs for individual teams
and the wider HR Function
- provide pragmatic, flexible and high quality consultancy
support

"A very useful process,
breaking down how the Business Partner role works in practice, working
out our stakeholder management plan and where and how we will get
our quick wins. We will keep up the momentum by widening the process
to involve the HR Advisors and having regular development and planning
sessions" Corinne Dolt, Regional
